Optometrist
Duties and Responsibilities:Previously known as opticians, optometrists are trained to examine the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality and problems with general health, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. They make a health assessment, offer clinical advice, prescribe spectacles or contact lenses and refer patients for further treatment, when necessary.

Salary:$103,207-$129,159

Education:  A four-year post-baccalaureate Doctor of Optometry degree program. This program of study is designed to provide individuals with the skills needed to gain licensure as optometrists.

Demand:Employment of optometrists is projected to grow 27 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Because vision problems tend to occur more frequently later in life, an aging population will require more optometrists.
